But most people don’t do anything about their fan craze.
Have you ever had an obsession? A book series, TV show or movie that you just can’t get out of your head? Believe me, everybody has, and everybody does. Rainbow Rowell loved the characters of Simon and Baz and their story so much that she ended up turning it into a full-fledged novel, which went on to become Carry On! So, for fantasy fans, Fangirl fans, fan fiction fans, and just overall reading fans alike, Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is for you. Fangirl is about a girl named Cath who writes extreme amounts of fan fiction about her obsession, which happens to be none other than – what else? – the (fictional) Simon Snow series. Plus, it’s not just told by Simon’s perspective but also the point of view of Baz, their friend Penelope, long-lost Lucy (the former love of the all-powerful Mage), and even the great and powerful Mage himself! Therefore, you not only get to see the story come together through one main character’s eyes, but through multiple unique perspectives, which I have always loved.įinally, one of the coolest things about Carry On (though I only discovered this through reading the author’s note at the end of the book!!) is that it is actually the extended story of Cath’s fan fiction in Fangirl. The plot twists, the brewing romance, the everyday phrases turned into powerful spells…I couldn’t stop flipping the pages.
Think Harry Potter mixed with Twilight, along with Rainbow Rowell’s incredible writing style, and you have this amazing book. The two former enemies are forced to put their differences aside and form a truce in order to defeat the Humdrum and evade death…but when a stronger force – the force of love – comes between them, will they be able to resist its pull, or will it be just what they have looked for all their lives? And of course, all this is going on while Baz has gone missing, and once he miraculously turns up, things get even weirder. The Insidious Humdrum, also knows as the worst threat to magic that Watford has ever seen, has been rampaging England, stealing magic and destroying magicians as it goes, and Simon is forced to battle threats including dragons, vampires and even other magicians in order to stay alive. However, his unpredictable magic leaves him being, as his roommate Baz so nicely puts it, “the worst Chosen One ever to be chosen.” At eighteen years old, he is whisked out of the human world and brought back to the magicians’ school Watford for his eighth and final year. Simon Snow is the “Chosen One”, prophesied to be the one magician to defeat evil and bring peace back to the World of Mages. It’s an exciting time to be Rainbow Rowell fangirl! Carry On will be available on October 6, 2015.With just a touch of magic and an “Abracadabra”, Rainbow Rowell brings her newest story, Carry On: The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow, to life. So when Rowell announced that she was writing a standalone fantasy novel called Carry On about Simon and Baz, I couldn’t help but be mad excited.Ĭarry On doesn’t hit bookstores for another few weeks, but to get readers pumped, there is a sweet pre-order campaign. While Fangirl goes on to explore Cath’s life outside of the fandom, many readers were curious about “Simon Snow” and how much it meant to Cath. She writes popular fanfiction about them and is therefore famous within the fandom. Simon and Baz, characters from Simon Snow, are her comfort.
I have to say that I have a softer spot for Fangirl, a story about an introvert who starts the next big phase of her life: college. Cath, who is obsessed with the Simon Snow book series and movies, tries to deal with all the new life changes and obstacles. She released the acclaimed Eleanor and Park and the much-adored Fangirl.
2013 was a big year for #1 New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell.
